Beaufort, SC

Historic home at 511 Prince Street in Beaufort, South Carolina. Built in 1843, it is most famous for being the home and birthplace of Robert Smalls, a Civil War hero who stole a Confederate ship to gain his freedom, and later became a U.S. Congressman.

Savannah, GA

A historic Reform Jewish synagogue. Founded in 1733 by forty-one pioneering Jewish settlers, it is the third-oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. The congregation is famous for its neo-Gothic building, America's oldest Torah, and letters from George Washington.

Darien, GA

Large historic rice farm in McIntosh County, Georgia, located just south of Darien on the Altamaha River. Established in the late 1700s by Founding Father Major Pierce Butler, the property relied on the brutal labor of hundreds of enslaved people to build and maintain a complex system of dikes and canals to grow rice.

Dunbar Creek, St. Simons Island, GA

In 1803, a group of about 75 enslaved Igbo people from Nigeria revolted against their captors, took control of the ship, and subsequently walked into the marshy waters of Dunbar Creek to drown themselves, choosing death over enslavement.
